Science Buddies

Science Buddies

Sometimes it feels like coming up with a science project idea is the hardest part. Fear no more my project challenged friend, Science Buddy has got what you need. Project ideas in a variety of topics and sorted by difficulty level. Each project lists requirements and equipment needed, also step-by-step instructions. Science Buddy also has a “Project Guide” section, “Ask an Expert” forums, and an area for Teachers. The only thing they wont help you with is cleaning fake-volcano-lava from the blue ribbon you’ll win.

Knowledge Web

Knowledge Web

One of my absolute favorite shows growing up was “Connections” with James Burke.  (If you arent familiar with it, run to Youtube and find some episodes) Evidently the James Burke Institute is developing an interactive teaching tool called the “Knowledge Web” designed around the same premise as the TV show (that history and science are full of fun, interesting, quirky and unexpected connections.) The video overview goes through the highlights of the project, and you can sign up by emailing –> educators@k-web.org . I love his presentation style and ability to keep you sitting on the edge of your chair till the very end. I imagine the Knowledge Web tool will be a huge hit.

Newspaper Archive

NewspaperArchive

The Newspaper Archive is the largest online historical database of newspapers. Over 70million pages of newspapers from 1759 to present, including some really cool special (topic) collections. You can browse by “recently added”, “Top Papers” or “Top Searches”. If you’re a history nut, you’ll drool at all the things to explore here.

HotChalk

HotChalk

HotChalk is an online tool to facilitate better collaboration between teachers, students and parents. It is being expanded and upgraded, however already includes the ability to manage and schedule assignments, track grades and communicate with parents. HotChalk also has a walk-through tour and a blog. The software is free but ad-supported, however all ads are approved by HotChalks patent-pending ‘Community Standards Engine Technology’. Which means you only see ads that are education-focused and audience-appropriate (for K12 environment).

MySchooLog

MySchooLog

MySchooLog is a new online school management website that looks like it’ll have a lot of potential. Its still in ‘Beta’, but it has sections to help you stay organized, remember your schedule, take notes, create To-Do lists and store files. Its available in seven languages, has a nifty ’screenshots’ section so you can check out the full feature set, and its free!

LectureFox

LectureFox
LectureFox is a collection of online university lectures - perhaps a bit mature for the majority of K12 readers, but it was so cool I had to include a link to it. If lectures aren’t your thing, they also have a blog.

Teacher Tube

Teacher Tube

Do you like YouTube and other video sharing sites…. but wish your students would use a resource that was more “educational” ?… well then you should check out TeacherTube. Jason, Adam and Jodie have put together a site where you can browse nearly 500 educational videos by topic/subject, or sort them by rating or # of times viewed. Its fairly new (March 2007).. but it has great potential to ease your search for educational videos.

BarCharts

BarCharts

Lamination. I dont know where schools today would be without it. I very vividly remember being in elementary school reading a book about the ocean and I got sick all over the book (and my desk). Well, you cant laminate desks, but you can laminate paper. BarCharts was started around the idea of producing laminated quick-reference guides - they now have over 350 covering a range of topics from English, History and Anatomy (see above) to computers/technology and cooking. You can buy them in a variety of sizes from small flash cards to poster size. They are also available in Spanish.

Kids With Cameras

Kids With Cameras

Kids With Cameras is a non-profit based in New York that provides cameras to poor and lower-class kids as a way to empower them about the possibilities. Picture projects cover places like Calcutta, Haiti, Jerusalem and Cairo. They’ve released a 224page photography book that you can buy online, as well as a new DVD for the film “Born into Brothels” which received the “Best Documentary” Academy Award at the 77th Academy Award show. Definitely inspiring !

The Documentary Blog

The Documentary Blog

The Documentary Blog certainly shows that reality can be stranger than fiction. From documentaries on people who make balloon animals, to the origin of coffee, or more serious topics like suicide jumpers off the Golden Gate bridge; This blog is all about culture and interesting human stories. Their archives go all the way back to 2002, and they have a Podcast and great Links section.
